Just stumbled on this on VW's German site:

"Vorläufiger Abschied vom Phaeton.
Der Phaeton wird nicht mehr produziert und ist daher nicht mehr bestellbar.
Die nächste Generation des Phaeton wird mit einem langstreckentauglichen, vollelektrischen Antrieb und zukunftsweisenden Assistenzsystemen neue Wege einschlagen. Freuen Sie sich auf einen Luxuswagen mit modernem und emotionalem Design."

That means VW is retooling Dresden to make an all-electric Phaeton....could be interesting...
 
Interesting, but probably expensive. The original Phaeton was interesting too, but few bought it because the car ended up being a fancy VW for BMW money. The new car might be a VW for Tesla money. It's difficult to build a car in limited numbers that makes financial sense to both the company and consumers. I'm guessing it will be another compliance car.

Among other challenges is charging infrastructure...sure the car may come with quick charging but it will be a tough to sway buyers away from Tesla that already has a vast supercharging network where owners can charge for free. For EV's to move forward, there needs to be some collaboration regarding battery packs and charging stations.
 
All VW does is put out press releases -- about future electric vehicles they are going to make.. What they have produced so far is the VW e-Golf,
and I don't think it matches up well against the Mercedes B250e-- except on price.
