What ever works for you. I have no expedience with current commercial units. Whatever floats your boat. After 3 years of building OpenEVSE units I am satisfied. My 40A unit charges my eGolf at 30A just fine.
The timer in the OpenEVSE unit opens a window and the car starts charging when the window of normal operation opens.
I like basic units but some have added wifi modules using the RS232 like header. (5V and ground instead of +-12V) As for me, smart phone apps are overkill. If I need the EVSE's status I can just look at it. (yes I skipped the wifi generation) and I do not see that I am missing anything I am old but the basic OpenEVSE works for me.
